MYS, Mary - (1928 - 2017) - Peacefully, as the sun rose on Wednesday August 23, 2017 with her family at her side, Mary passed away and began her journey into heaven.
Mary leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband of 67 years Mykola Mys, niece Ivanna Hawryliuk (Winnipeg), and family in Ukraine. She will also be missed by her many cousins, extended family, and friends.
She was predeceased by her parents George and Veronica Myketa, stepmother Madge (Leitchman) Myketa, sister Phyllis (Myketa) Hawryliuk and brother-in-law Bob Hawryliuk.
Mary was born in Hamilton, Ontario on June 17, 1928 to George and Veroncia Myketa. Her formal education was completed in Hamilton. She worked as a bookkeeper for MacDonald Plumbing and for Herb Schreiber. Upon retirement, Mary and Mykola travelled to various places including Bermuda, Hawaii, and Florida. They spent many summers at their cottage on Lake Erie.
Mary was very active in the Ukrainian and Church communities. In her early years, she attended Ukrainian School and took dancing and Catechism classes at Holy Spirit Ukrainian Catholic Church. She was very proud of the fact that she was recognised as the oldest long-time member (of the parish) during the 100 year anniversary celebration of the parish this past year. Through the years, she served in many positions including Junior League President (7 years) as part of The Ukrainian Catholic Women's League of Canada.
In addition, Mary was an active member of Ukrainian National Federation (Hamilton Branch) and/ as a member of the Ukrainian Women`s Organization of Canada and the branch Senior Club. Mary met her husband, Mykola, at a UNF dance one Saturday night in 1948. They were married on May 6, 1950 at Holy Spirit Ukrainian Catholic Church.
My Uncle and I would like to thank my Aunt's doctors – Dr. Ludwin, Dr. Casale, Dr. Khalidi, Dr. Miller and all of their staff. In addition, we would like to thank Beatrice Mycio, Doreen McDaucauley, Vinh The Lam and Natasha for their friendship and support. Thank you to 911(MB & ON), and to the doctors and nurses of Hamilton General Hospital ER and 7 South.
All who knew Aunty Mary will miss her smile, her witty humour, and her outgoing personality that lit up a room.
My Aunt and Uncle felt it was very important to give back to their community. St. Joseph Healthcare Hamilton was always near and dear to their hearts. Their names will be located on the Garden of Grace Donor Wall at the Carlton Campus. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either the St. Joseph`s Healthcare Hamilton Foundation or the Holy Spirit Ukrainian Catholic Church so that her spirit will live on.
Visitation at Markey-Dermody funeral home, 1774 King Street East, Hamilton on Sunday from 6-8 pm with Panachyda at 7:30 pm.
Funeral Service at Holy Spirit Ukrainian Catholic Church, 15 St. Olga Street, on Monday, August 28th at 10:30 am. Interment Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
