João (John) Da Cruz Naia
July 9, 1942 – March 9, 2025
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of João (John) Da Cruz Naia, who passed away peacefully at home in Whitby on March 9, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
John was born in Aveiro, Portugal, on July 9, 1942, to Maria and José Naia. He proudly served in the Portuguese Army as a Paratrooper, including a tour in Angola, Africa. In 1966, he met the love of his life, Rosinda, and they were married on September 29, 1968. Together, they built a beautiful life, raising two daughters and moving to Canada in 1975 in pursuit of new opportunities.
In Canada, John worked as a certified welder at E. F. Barnes Ltd. He later served as an Industrial Mechanic on the Ocean Ranger Oil Rig and was a proud Millwright with UBC Local 2309 until his retirement in 2004.
A man of many passions, John was an avid target shooter and a longtime member of the Oshawa Gun and Skeet Club. He was a devoted fan of FC Porto and never missed a Toronto Maple Leafs game. He also enjoyed fishing, home projects, and spending time with his friends at the local coffee shop.
John is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Rosinda, and his daughters, Isabel (Marcel) and Maria-João (Andy). He was a cherished Avô to Brianna, Alexandra, Cassidy, and Connor. He is also survived by his sisters, Maria Eduarda and Maria Do Rosario, and lovingly remembered by his extended family, including his many nieces and nephews in Portugal, France, and England.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Rosa Manuela.
Known to many as "Big John," he was a gentle giant whose warmth and joy left a lasting impact on everyone he met. His memory will forever remain in the hearts of his family, friends, and all those who loved him.
Private Family Service and Burial:
As per John's wishes, a private family service and burial will take place at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in John's honour to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be greatly appreciated.
Memories and notes of condolence may be shared at MOUNT LAWN FUNERAL HOME.
