John Stuart
August 23, 1941 – October 21, 2024
John Stuart passed away peacefully at home in the early morning of October 21, 2024. Born to Allen and Ethel Stuart, John was raised on a farm in North Algona Wilberforce, where his family has lived since 1860. He was a graduate of Pembroke Collegiate and Eganville High Schools, and later taught elementary and high school in Carp and Cornwall for 35 years before retiring to Mink Lake in Renfrew County.
John will be remembered for his great love of the natural world and sense of adventure. He enjoyed whitewater and flatwater canoeing, parachuting, flying airplanes, backcountry camping, hiking, sailing, photography, rock hounding, astronomy, cross-country skiing, and exploring wild plants and trees. A skilled lifelong woodworker, John crafted everything from bowls to doors, and even built a traditional log cabin in 1976. His passion for woodlot management led him to serve as president of the Renfrew chapter of the Ontario Woodlot Association.
Survived by his wife, Helen-Ann Stuart (Passmore); daughter Kathryn Stuart and grandchildren Alexandra, Logan, Rusty, and Magnolia; daughter Margaret Stuart and grandchild Jorah. He is also survived by his sisters Ethel Stuart and Margaret McLeod, sister-in-law Eleanor Glennie (Passmore), and brother-in-law Jeff Passmore. Predeceased by sister Mary Olsen and brother-in-law Eric Olsen.
John’s final care has been entrusted to Zohr Family Funeral Home, Renfrew. Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 16th from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., followed by a Celebration of Life at 1:30 p.m. in the Zohr Family Chapel. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers.
