Yong Mah
February 12, 1939 - November 25, 2024
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Yong Moon Mah on Monday, November 25, 2024, at the age of 85. Yong passed away peacefully with his family by his side after a short illness at the Owen Sound Hospital.
Born on February 12, 1939, in Kilju, Ham Kyunig Buck-Do, North Korea, to Chong Guk Mah and Sopanye Mah, Yong experienced a remarkable life shaped by resilience and achievement. His family fled to Gun San, South Korea during the Korean War before settling in Seoul, where Yong graduated from Kyung Bok High School.
After serving in the Air Force, Yong pursued higher education in West Germany, earning his degree in Mechanical Engineering specializing in Pulp & Paper from the University of Technische Hochschule Darmstadt. While in Germany, he met Sotchi ("Suzie") Tchong, and they married in 1971. Together, they immigrated to Canada in 1973, where Yong began his career as an engineer with Reed Company in Quebec City and later in Dryden, Ontario, retiring from Weyerhaeuser.
Yong enjoyed golfing, fishing, reading world history, and participating in social clubs such as the Edelweiss Club and an investment club. He was a devoted husband to Suzie, a loving father to Katja (Matthew) of Owen Sound and John (Tonya) of Waterloo, and a proud grandfather to Kai, Bode, Tajy, Heath, and Mischa. Yong is also survived by his sisters Hae Duck Kim, Hae Ok Lee (Seoul, Korea), Choon Ok Rhee, and sister-in-law Jae Kyung Mah (Maryland), along with many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at Greenwood Cemetery on Thursday, November 28, 2024, at 11:30 a.m., followed by a reception at Brian E. Wood Funeral Home, 250 14th St. W., Owen Sound.
