James Theodore Slobodian

1929 - November 21, 2024

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of James Theodore Slobodian on November 21, 2024, at the age of 94. Beloved by his family and friends, James led a joyful and meaningful life, marked by love, faith, and an appreciation for the simple pleasures of life.

Educated at Ottawa Tech, James enjoyed a long and fulfilling career, first in the labs at the National Research Council and later with Atomic Energy of Canada / Theratronics. A natural craftsman, he loved working with his hands, whether in his well-stocked shop, tinkering and building, or in the garden and at the family camp. A devoted Catholic, his faith guided him throughout his life.

James was predeceased by his parents, Margaret Maloney of Cantley, QC, and John (Jack) Slobodian of Galicia, Ukraine, as well as his brothers John and Edgar. His beloved wife of nearly 60 years, Eileen McConville, passed away in 2017. He is survived by his brother Gerald (Marcelle Hubert), cousin Evelyn Maloney, in-laws Claudette and Tom McConville, Sunanda and Ashoke Pacey, and many cherished nieces and nephews. His children, Louise (Richard Cohen) and Michael (Marian), will miss him dearly.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Valley Stream Manor and Carefor for their compassionate care over the years, and to the many companions who brought joy to James’s life. Special thanks to niece Peggy, nephew Tim, and friends Marilyn and Vimal for their loving support.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate James’s life during the following services:

  • Visitation on Tuesday, November 26, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Tubman Funeral Homes – Garden Chapel, 3440 Richmond Rd, Nepean, ON.
  • Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, November 27, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Martin de Porres Church, 3891 Old Richmond Rd, Nepean, ON, followed by a reception in the church hall.
  • Interment at Notre Dame Cemetery at 3:00 p.m. on the same day.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Development and Peace or Shepherds of Good Hope would be greatly appreciated by the family.

As James often said with a twinkle in his eye, “One egg is un œuf!” His love, humour, and kindness will remain forever in our hearts.
